A Nashville Icon Since 1959

Sam’s, a beloved Nashville institution, has been serving the community since its inception in 1959. Founded by the owner’s father on Buchanan St. N Nashville, Sam’s initially started as a neighborhood general store, offering a wide array of products such as fishing equipment, paint, hardware, and work clothes. It was a reflection of the era when general stores were a common sight in neighborhoods across the country.

In the mid-1960s, Sam’s began to evolve. The store started to welcome road salesmen offering fashionable clothing, including flashy designs, glittery apparel, and fashionable dress pants. This marked a significant shift from its original inventory. Initially hesitant due to limited knowledge of this new business, Sam’s embraced the change, and it proved to be a turning point for the store.

Fashion clothing and shoes soon became the primary focus of Sam’s. As time passed, the store transformed from a general store into a clothing and shoe haven. However, unforeseen challenges forced Sam to retire prematurely in 1975. This tumultuous environment led to Sam’s decision to retire and his sons to seek a new location.

In 1980, a fortuitous opportunity arose as Sam’s relocated to its current 5th Avenue location. This move proved to be a game-changer as downtown Nashville was experiencing a shift. While most businesses were moving to malls, Sam’s continued to thrive by catering to the local Community and its proximity to downtown.

The most significant turning point for Sam’s was its acquisition of the current building in 1980. This investment secured the store’s future, ensuring its continued presence in Nashville.
